Just as we thought the dreary
cold and wet weather of May, June and early July was with us for the
summer, a beautiful ‘high’ crept in from the Pacific and now we have
to deal with a steady heat wave creeping up to the mid 30C range –
depending in which part of the West you are situated – Marmot Basin
received SNOW when many others were basking in the heat. However, it
is a very pleasant change and most of us welcome it. This can of
course be a double-edged sword – great for all those construction
and development projects some of which are contained in this edition
of the News but not so great for the very real threat of grass and
undergrowth fires within the forests that extend throughout most of
our ski areas (nor for the farmers amongst you!). The utmost
vigilance is key for everyone – Be Alert, Be on Guard, Take Every
Precaution.
Our congratulations to John
Ogilvy, John G. Ogilvy Consulting Engineer Ltd, a long time member
of CWSAA for giving 40 years of service to the Canadian Standards
Association, working on the industry’s behalf on the Z-98 Code!
By now you should have received
the survey questionnaire for the annual Economic Analysis. I would
make a special plea to every ski area operator – please take the
time to participate and return your completed document to Ecosign
Mountain Resort Planners as soon as possible. It is really important
to have the greatest participation as possible – the results play a
critical role in dealing with the governments, particularly in
making the case to keep the costs of operating as low as possible.
Good luck with all your summer
work projects, programs and mountain bike events – I look forward to
seeing many of you during the next few weeks when visiting your
areas.
